Submit to the authority

1 Peter 2:13 (NIV)

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men:
whether to the king, as the supreme authority 

Last week, my manager met with me and assigned many projects to me. I felt overwhelmed. I thought to myself, “Why me? Why me?”

I pleadingly asked him to remove one project from my list, but he was very reluctant to listen to me. After our meeting, I left his cube, unhappy and burdened. Back to my cube, I sat at my desk and kept thinking about his unfairness. The more I thought about it, the more unyielding I became.

After a long day of work, I finally left the office building, got into my car and prayed. I asked the Lord to search my heart and to cleanse me. As I was praying to the Sovereign Lord, I heard Him say to me, “Submit to the authority.” His message was very clear, but I was still displeased with my manager’s decision.

Night fell. I had my own quiet time with God. I prayed and asked Him to examine my heart and to help me see my sin. Once again, He told me the same thing: submit to the authority. This time, I surrendered and repented of my sin.

What happened afterward? I felt relieved and happy. It was like my burden was removed, even though the number of projects still remained the same. For the days that followed, my anger no longer bound me and I won a spiritual battle against the evil one. Moreover, today my manager told me that he would give one of my projects to my co-worker. Of course, I smiled.

In my case, I have learned a lesson. I need to submit to my manager and ask God to give me a willing heart to work on my projects in a way that I can honor the Lord.
